Getting Started as a Lecturer
Get acquainted with the LMS by learning how to access your courses, navigate the dashboard, and use the essential tools required for online teaching.
- Open your assigned course from My Courses.
- Turn Edit Mode on.
- Select Settings to update the course name, summary, visibility, and other course details.
- Organize your course into appropriate Topics/Sections.
- Rename sections according to your teaching plan, e.g. Week 1: Introduction.
- Save your changes and review the course from the student perspective.
Tip: Set up your course structure before adding learning materials to keep your content organized.
- Open your course and turn Edit Mode on.
- Navigate to the section where you want to add content.
- Click Add an activity or resource.
- Select the appropriate resource, such as File, Page, Book, URL, or other available resource.
- Enter the required information and upload or add your content.
- Click Save and return to course.
- Open the resource to confirm that it displays correctly.
Tip: Use clear and meaningful names for your resources so students can easily identify them.
- Open your course and turn Edit Mode on.
- Navigate to the appropriate course section.
- Click Add an activity or resource.
- Select Big Blue Button.
- Enter the session title, date, time, and meeting details.
- Save the activity.
- Confirm that the virtual class link is visible and accessible to students.
Tip: Add virtual class sessions ahead of time and communicate the schedule to students through an announcement.
- Turn Edit Mode on and navigate to the relevant course section.
- Click Add an activity or resource.
- Select Assignment.
- Enter the assignment name and instructions.
- Set the submission type, due date, and grading method.
- Configure any additional settings required.
- Click Save and display.
- Preview the assignment to ensure everything is correctly configured.
Tip: Provide clear instructions, submission requirements, and deadlines to avoid confusion.
Creating a Quiz
- Open your course and turn Edit Mode on.
- Select Add an activity or resource → Quiz.
- Enter the Quiz name and instructions.
- Configure the timing, attempts, grading, and question behaviour.
- Click Save and display.
- Select Questions → Add → a new question or from question bank.
- Add the required questions and assign marks.
- Save and Preview the quiz before making it available to students.
Creating a Question Bank
- Open your course and select More → Question Bank.
- Select Categories to create a category for your questions.
- Click Add category, give it a meaningful name, and save.
- Select Questions and choose the category you created.
- Click Create a new question.
- Select the question type, such as Multiple Choice, True/False, Short Answer, etc.
- Enter the question, answer options, correct answer, and marks.
- Save the question.
- Repeat the process to build your question bank.
Adding Question Bank Questions to a Quiz
When creating or editing a quiz:
Questions → Add → from question bank → Select Category → Select Questions → Add to Quiz.
💡 Tip: Create separate question-bank categories for different topics or units. This makes it easier to reuse questions and build quizzes efficiently.
- Open the relevant course.
- Select Participants.
- Search for or locate the student you want to manage.
- Review their enrolment and course participation.
- Where permitted, use the available options to manage enrolment or communicate with the learner.
- Use course reports and activity information to monitor participation.
Tip: If a student cannot access your course, first check whether they are correctly enrolled before escalating the issue.
- Open your course.
- Select Grades from the course navigation.
- Review the available grade items and assessment activities.
- Configure grade categories and weighting where required.
- Grade assignments and other manually assessed activities.
- Review the calculated course grades.
- Provide feedback where appropriate.
- Ensure grades are correctly configured before releasing them to students.
Tip: Set up your grading structure early in the trimester so that assessment results are organized consistently throughout the course.
